Introduction

About MakerGhat

MakerGhat, a non-profit organization, builds low-cost makerspaces in schools and communities, accompanied by evidence-based curriculum and robust teacher training. Their programs develop key skills and attitudes linked to employability through hands-on training.
Broadly, their goal is to build the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs who come from diverse backgrounds and enable social and economic change for their communities.

How might we design a user-friendly website and dashboard for MakerGhat, effectively showcasing their impactful work?

Outcome

Through strategic UX design, we forged a cohesive online experience, harmonizing the website's aesthetics with user-centric functionalities. The dashboard emerged as a beacon, allowing stakeholders to delve into MakerGhat's multi-year performance across diverse parts of India, spotlighting key skills development and employability enhancement.

Roadmap

requirements gathering

What does MakerGhat want?

MakerGhat's requirements were clear: design a user-friendly website and dashboard that vividly communicates the organization's commitment to innovation and hands-on learning. The visual theme had to be bright, bold, and playful, reflecting the fun nature of their mission. Stakeholders should effortlessly navigate and explore MakerGhat's impact across different Indian regions. The resulting design aimed to be both engaging and aligned with the non-profit's ethos.

What is wrong with the existing website?

Navigating the current website poses challenges due to a confusing flow, making it difficult for users to find information

Imbalance between excessive text and insufficient information, failing to convey MakerGhat's impactful programs

Lack of scalability, unable to grow with the growth of MakerGhat, unable to portray the organization's expanding impact

Branding lacks a fun element that aligns with the organization's mission of making learning a joyful experience. The visual design is drab and outdated, failing to captivate visitors and reflect the dynamic nature of MakerGhat's initiatives

challenge #1

Should we have separate pages for each section or a single page with navigation support?

no

Pros

Cons

Separate Pages

easier to organize information hierarchically

easier to index, potentially boosting SEO rankings

provide a scalable structure as the organization grows

consistent design across different pages is more challenging

longer loading times when navigating between pages

users may need to click through multiple pages to find the desired information

Single Page

straightforward and streamlined user experience

cohesive visual identity and user interface

ideal for a continuous and engaging story

information-rich content may be challenging to organize, potentially overwhelming users

search engines may find it harder to index content

layout may become less practical, affecting scalabilty as content grows

Single-Page Website with Navigation Support was a more suitable choice.
By leveraging a single-page website with well-implemented navigation support, MakerGhat can effectively showcase its projects, maintain a consistent visual theme, and offer an immersive user experience that aligns with its mission and values.

Ideation

Information Architecture

Once we decided on the single-page layout, MakerGhat's site architecture was fairly simple. The main challenge involved optimizing content placement for user resonance. MakerGhat's value proposition was strategically positioned early on to give users a quick overview of the organization's mission. The only separate pages included a dedicated analytics dashboard for a detailed look at the company's performance across different states in India and a learning platform offering STEM courses for students and educators. This design choice aimed for simplicity, ensuring key information is easily accessible.
